Rules for Kumite
- Allowed protective equipment is gum shield and box (women may wear chest protectors). All other protection to be cleared by the chief referee.
- Dangerous techniques are not permitted. These include axe kicks and spinning techniques whereby no control or focus can be applied.
- No spectacles, jewellery, false teeth, or unrestrained long hair.
- Clean white Gi’s to be worn with sleeves and trouser bottoms rolled down.
- Dissent against any official, play-acting, appeals to spectators, rude gestures, unsociable behaviour etc etc are not permitted and may lead to disqualification.
- The scoring is 2 minutes Ippon-Han Sho except in finals when it may be 5 minutes Sanbon-Sho.
- Jogai defined as any part of the foot over the line. First jogai is a warning, second is wazza ari, third will loose the match irrespective of Ippon-Han or Sanbon-Sho.
- Encho sen (a further 2 minutes because of a drawn fight) – both competitors scores to carry over (including jogai’s)
- Sai Encho Sen (2 minutes with clean score sheet) If still drawn judges to give definite decision.
Additional Rules for 3 Man Team Kumite
- 3 members (+1 reserve). Each team member to be male, at least 16 years on the day and of any grade.
- There will be no fight-off for third place.
- The team manager or captain to register the order of fighting before the competition starts, but this order can be changed after any round by re-registration.
- One substitution only allowed (ie you cannot choose the freshest 3 out of your 4 men and keep rotating them) and there must be a valid reason for the change (eg injury)
- If a team is eliminated then no member of that team can be substituted into another team in the competition (ie you cannot be in a team and be a reserve for another team)
- The winning team will hold the SHIRO ASANO CHALLENGE VASE presented by Hanshi Asano for the year and must return it at the succeeding championship.
Rules for Kata
SENIOR MEN/WOMEN
- Compulsory Kata’s are: Bassai Dai, Jion, Enpi and Kanku Dai
- Tokui Kata cannot be: Any of the above or Heian Kata or Tekki Shodan
JUNIOR (by age/grade) VETERAN
- Compulsory Kata’s are: Heian Kata’s (1-5) and Tekki Shodan
- Tokui Kata: No Restrictions
