The Kyoto Shotokan Karate Club is based in Shirehampton, Bristol - close to Avonmouth, Sea Mills, Lawrence Weston, Portishead and Westbury-on-Trym.
We run classes twice weekly at two Bristol venues: on Monday (at St. Bernards Primary School, Shirehampton) and Thursday (at Avonmouth Rugby Club, Shirehampton) evenings, with sessions for both beginners and experienced students - click here for our Training Schedule.
We teach traditional Shotokan Karate - our lessons are structured to teach traditional Karate as taught by the Japanese, with the emphasis on discipline and karate technique. Karate is suitable for all ages, we have children training from the ages of 5 upwards, and men/women of all ages (there is no upper age limit).
The lessons are taught by club instructor Steve Ashby (2nd Dan) - Steve has over 25 years karate experience, starting to learn karate back in 1984 at the Konjaku Shin dojo under Sensei Dave Kershaw (6th Dan).
Steve established the Bristol Karate club back in 1996.
To ensure students are taught to the highest standard, all our students are graded by Hanshi Shiro Asano (9th Dan), the Chief Instructor to SKI Europe.
We host regular karate courses in Bristol with senior SKI-GB instructors, Sensei Paul Mead (7th Dan), 2011 SKI European Gold medalist (Masters Kumite) and Sensei Dave Kershaw (6th Dan), bringing some of the most experienced karate instructors to Bristol for our students.
Sensei Paul Mead will be teaching at the Bristol Karate club on two occasions this year: 23rd July 2011 (cancelled due to family circumstances) and Sat 17th December 2011 at Avonmouth Rugby Club.

Our club is affiliated to Shotokan Karate International (SKI) of Great Britain, under Hanshi Shiro Asano (9th Dan European Chief Instructor SKIEF).
SKI is headed by the world renowned Kancho Hirokazu Kanazawa (10th Dan) and is one of the largest worldwide karate organisations.

All our Testimonials can be viewed by clicking here.
I was at an age where everyone thought I was crazy to even think of returning to karate.68 years old and 30 years since I had last trained. This was when I found myself standing barefoot in the dojo of 'Kyoto Shotokan Karate Club'. 9 months and two gradings later, I can speak with nothing less than gratitude and admiration for the skills and teaching ability of the club instructor 'Sensei Steve Ashby'. The combination of a friendly club with excellent traditional teaching is hard to beat, and I am proof that age is no barrier. Especially, if like me, you have the right teacher. Thank you Sensei.....
